Feather & Fern Farmstead is home to one of the oldest blue dark projects in the US. We started this project off several years ago with a male from our BSO pen who had superior type and just a touch of red on his wing. By crossing him with high quality dark hens, we took the first step in the long process of breeding out any trace of red or orange. The end goal of this project is to obtain the clean silver of standard dark Brahmas, but with the blue of BSO Brahmas.
Blue does not "breed true" in poultry so our blue dark project also produces regular (black patterned) darks. While blue dark is not a recognized color and therefore has limited options for showing, the dark Brahmas from our blue dark line have gone on to win best of breed at large APA recognized shows throughout the country.
